Several websites are now selling non-FDA-Approved Contact Lenses on the Internet. These lenses have not been tested or cleared by the FDA and could be dangerous to consumers. Web sites that have been identified as selling non-regulated/ non-FDA-approved contact lenses are listed at the bottom of this page.

BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU BUY YOUR HALLOWEEN CONTACT LENSES!

Contact lenses are medical devices and are regulated by the FDA. Any contact lens sold in the U.S. must be cleared by the FDA as "safe and effective" for use.

Recently, some internet sites have been discovered selling unknown and non-FDA-approved cosmetic colored contact lenses. Most of these non-approved contact lenses come from Asia (sometimes China) and have not been tested or evaluated by the FDA in terms of sterility and "Good Manufacturing Practices." Some of the colors used to make these lenses are toxic and some could actually be carcinogenic.

Some of these web sites are in the U.S., but many are out of the country. It is very difficult for the FDA to control illegal contact lenses coming in from outside the U.S.

If you purchase contact lenses on the internet consider the following guidelines:
    1. Purchase contact lenses from an established U.S. or Canadian website that features FDA approved contact lenses.
    2. Follow the guidelines of your eye care professional when wearing contact lenses.
    3. Have routine eye exams.
    4. Maintain good hygiene as defined by your eye care professional.
The FDA has received reports of corneal ulcers and blindness associated with some decorative contact lenses.

If the website does not show a mailing address or does not have a phone number - be wary! Find out where they are located.
